Window screens, the most fragile parts of any windows, often need to be replaced long before the windows themselves do. That's the most cost-effective way to fix defective window screens, because you can buy an entire 36" x 100' roll for less than $50. The technique of replacing screens isn't difficult to learn. Fiberglass screen comes in charcoal and silver-gray with the charcoal being the most commonly used color.
Aluminum screens are also very popular, because they are very durable, they resist rust, and they never sag. This material is covered with a protective coating that helps it resist corrosion. Another kind of metal screening material is copper-bronze. This screen comes in a lovely, bright-gold finish that will develop a patina over time which will protect the copper from corrosion. Of course, this type of screen comes at a premium price with a 36" x 100' roll costing almost $400.
Special screens are available that protect your home against insects and offer more privacy in areas such as sun porches, patio rooms, and swimming pool areas. The wider strands in some of these screens make them stronger and sturdier so for use in wider spans, and by coating the strands manufacturers offer more privacy with greater visibility from the inside. In addition, insect screens with tiny mesh are great for areas of the country that have a lot of tiny insects, such as sand fleas and gnats.
